FitnessBiz 08 Insight

Fitbiz08In August, Justin will be one the presenters travelling Australia sharing secrets for running a profitable business. This month he shares some of the insights that will come from his session:

You have a choice in business:

Either . . . hire easy and manage hard . . . or . . . hire hard and manage easy!

This session will share what a high intensity work out interview will tell you about the candidate in regard to their intestinal fortitude, their listening skills and their desire for success. You can finally see your candidates in an environment that will show what they are really like.

You can also learn about some great games that you can play with your Team to keep them motivated and focussed on your goals. See how Putt for Prizes or Pass the Parcel can change the culture of the club to rewarding for positive behaviour.

And have you ever wanted to give away $25,000 to your staff (or keep for yourself!). Simply, catch your staff doing a great job and give them a $1 scratchie. You are rewarding positive behaviour to get the results you want.

Finally, we look at Starbucks, IKEA, Toyota and many more companies and see what they do for their staff to retain them. From these multi-national companies we can pick up powerful insights so the word spreads that YOU are the best employer in the fitness industry!

We now not only compete for members, we now compete for quality staff. This session at FitnessBiz will have your head buzzing on how you can market your business, regardless of size, as the place to work! You can afford not to miss out.

Look Who Won

Your Inside-out guide to personal brandingLast month you could win Sue Shine's book: Your Inside-Out Guide to Personal Branding, just for forwarding the Active E-News to a friend, colleague or even an enemy! We are excited to say the winner was Ben Ritchie.

But thank you to the following for forwarding our e-news:
  • Prince Deese
  • Jai Forster
  • Nick Deverall
  • Deb
  • Sean Corbet
  • Fiona Lindblom
  • Gavin Douglas
  • Balmain Fitness
  • Melody
  • Stephen & Narelle
And from Sue's e-news this month, we felt this was so important we had to share it. Our world is full of hustle and bustle but taking time out to be 'nice' will produce benefits to the business and a warm fuzzy in you! Here are Sue's keys to being nice:
  • Say hello, smile and greet others warmly when you get to work. Take a minute to ask how their weekend was.
  • Respect each other's personal space. Especially in an open plan situation where talking loudly or eating hot smelly food may be off-putting to your work colleagues.
  • If you must skip breakfast at home, arrive early and use the work kitchen, for breakfast and go out for lunch. Don't eat at your desk, the smell of your food could cause mouths to water and reduce productivity - or even offend!
  • We are sure you will survive without your mobile phone. So when in the presence of people keep our phones switched off and give that person we're with 100% of our undivided attention.
  • The greeting is where it all starts. Do we kiss? Shake hands? Just nod and hope for the best? It is confusing but why not just shake hands with everyone you meet whether you are male or female and if in any doubt - please leave the kiss out.
If you want to receive Sue's monthly e-news go to www.shinecomms.com.au

Communication - who uses what?

If you are wondering how to communicate with your customers, members or clients the results of this survey will give you the answers:

Your marketing approach should be based on the age of your members or clients. Sending text message to your 55 year olds, could mean you are missing the mark. Further, investing too much in social networking for your seniors may just not work.

You Can Win This Month

  WIN...

This month by forwarding the Active Management e-news you could win a great book to help you gain focus in life and work . . . the Rules of the Red Rubber Ball!

Exercise for the 50+ Community

Exercise 50+At the Australian fitness expo, we wandered the expo floor looking for the next big thing! There was lots of interesting products but one that attracted our attention was Fifty Plus Fitness.

This is an 'Action and Mobility' program that caters to the massive (literally and metaphorically speaking), constantly growing and largely ignored demographic within the fitness industry: the over fifties.

This program provides this group of people with effective and enjoyable activities in an appropriate environment. And each activity is challenging but safe and always fresh.

What we really like about the product, other than sensible exercise regime, is the concept that you can put the program in your club or operate satellite programs in your community as a feeder program into your main club.

Further and equally impressive is the fact that there will fortnightly new 'lesson plans' for your trainers to run. Not only will this take the ongoing work out of program development for you, but it will ensure your client never gets tired of the same old routine.

If you want to find out more drop James an email: or give him a buzz: 0433 164 465. And let him know you read about 50+ Fitness in the Active Management E-News and you never what he might give you!

Guerrilla Marketing Tip #24

Guerrilla Marketing Tip

This month we see the 2 year anniversary of sharing marketing tips for any size business from the guru Jay Conrad Levinson. This month is no different, as we focus on saying thank you!

We are all very good at saying thank you when we receive something: a gift, a referral, positive feedback or even a sale. Our parents have trained us to be polite and gracious for our opportunities.

But it's hard to be gracious when someone tells you 'No'.

So a guerrilla marketer realises it is important to take the time to thank anyone who has given you the opportunity of talking with them - whether it is good news or bad news. This thank you could keep you in the running for future opportunities when circumstances change.

Never burn a bridge or fail to acknowledge a rejection with a Thank You. Your Thank You is the first step towards ensuring your consideration for the next opportunity to come along.

If you need a Thank you card for your business this month you can save 5%, when you order your 'Thank you cards' from Active Management. To find out more click here

Green Health Clubs

Grow your business

The "Powered By You" Concept MotorWave is working with California Fitness to capture, store and use the energy exercisers produce by working out. From their website:

"In December we connected 5 elliptical machines and 8 steppers .We found that the elliptical machines are the most suitable for electricity production .The system uses the full body weight of the user and due to the high torque generated the output power and the output voltage a strong user can quite easily produce 80 to 100 watts .

Out of the 16 hours of gym opening hours the machines are being used in average 6 to 8 hours a day . We therefore save approx. 50% of the lighting cost and we save the other 50% by producing the electricity needed.

According to the company it will "take approx. 3 years to pay back the installation in $$ terms with actual machines. If we exclude the lighting installation cost and if machines are modified at the manufacturer level then the payback time can be of less than a year."

What are you doing to get your club or business green . . . we want to hear!

Firms of Endearment

Jet BlueThis month we look at Jet Blue. While the oil prices challenge us, Jet Blue is going from strength to strength and here is why:

  • They have five simple core values that are easy to remember, which helps in being able to deliver: safety, caring, integrity, fun and passion
  • New employee orientation consists of 1 hour with President Dave Barber & 1 hour with CEO David Neeleman on airline economics & 1 hour with Vincent Stabile, VP of People, for a discussion on company culture & values
  • People Department instead of Human Resources Department
  • JetBlue's CEO, David Neelman flies the airline at least weekly and walks the aisle talking to customers.
  • JetBlue Crew member Crisis Fund - every staff member contributes to a fund which is accessed if an employee is in crisis.
  • 3P's - Great people drive solid performance which generates prosperity for all
  • Support more than 75 charities per month in the cities they serve. These are donations usually of roundtrip vouchers.
If you would like to know more about Firms of Endearment we suggest you purchase the book. But the key to being successful is understanding that there are 5 stakeholders in every business:
  • Society
  • Partners
  • Investors
  • Customers
  • Employees

Firms of endearment understand how these all interact and develop strategies to ensure they all equally benefit.

Between Then & Now for Justin

GlobeIn the last month, I have been incredibly busy and for the first time a little overwhelmed - not stressed though! I have just completed the Australian Club Owners Round Table, the Australian Personal Trainer's Round Table, Round Table Western Australia and next week is the Australian Fitness Round Table! These have been back to back for 2 days each.

But wow what fun and insights. Every RT, I enjoy so much as I watch people grow. I had one member tell his RT how he now returns to the Club and shares everything he learnt - this is a massive change for him. I had another member share a very unique product they will be launching to their members which will produce huge profits!

An important part of RT is keeping each other accountable and then celebrating success. Often as owners and managers, we don't have anyone to say 'Well done' and at Round Table we love to say it! Then we love to celebrate this success. So many RT members love the accountability component.

And a common theme for the male members of the RT's is that work is taking over training and they know it. So they, knowing the power of the RT, have committed to dropping a few kilos by their next RT in November.

This was a powerful insight for me for several reasons:
  • Even as entrepreneurs we forget to maintain balance in lives. Make sure you give yourself time to chill and relax. No point working hard and having no time to spend the money you earn!
  • Everyone needs someone to report to - not is an autocratic manner, but rather just to help remain focussed.

We must keep our minds firing so, why don't you join the RT members and commit to working out over the next 4 months a little more or a little harder and see what that does for your business, your relationships and you!

And if you want to find out more about Round Table, email Justin
