Guerilla Marketing Myth Buster #7
This month our tip from Jay Conrad Levinson, the Guerilla Guru is...
Myth: Bad publicity is better than no publicity at all.
Truth: Bad publicity is bad for your business. No publicity is a lot healthier for you. People just love to gossip, especially about businesses that have done something so awful that the media exposes it. Guerrillas love publicity but avoid bad publicity because they know it spreads faster than wildfire.
2007 Rules for Life
Whether you are sales person, personal trainer, manager or a mum, here are 3 simple rules that Robert Crittendon, the author of The New Manager’s Starter Kit, suggests:
- Rule #1 – If it is worth doing, it is worth doing right! Stay 100% focused on the primary objective.
- Rule #2 – Make communication an obsession! Consider who needs to know what and how they will receive this information. Talking to people will be far more successful as written communication (especially email) can lead to misunderstanding!
- Rule #3 – don’t take yourself too seriously! Take your job and responsibilities seriously but don’t let work take over your life.
Statistics of Success In a study conducted by K.A Ericsson called, ‘The Role of Deliberate Practice in the Acquisition of Expert Performance’ here is the length of time it takes experts to reach peak performance:
- Chess players: 11 to 16 years
- Master musicians: 20 years
- Athletes: 10 years
- Authors: 10 years
Ericsson says many of us get to a level and remain at that place for 20 to 30 years! But experts put in ‘deliberate practice’ where they set goals, solicit immediate feedback, and constantly stretch their skills levels.
What are you doing to make your Team experts?
Sales in PT & Gyms Boom in January – are you ready?
Do you ever wonder how you are doing during your complimentary PT session, tour of the facility or presentation of your services? Here are some signs to help with your success:
- Positive signs: they makes frequent eye contact; nod is response to your statements; stroke their chin thoughtfully; listen attentively; ask thoughtful questions; ask start or delivery dates; wants information about choices; and appears friendly
- Negative signs: they make infrequent eye contact; appears pre-occupied and disinterested; taps fingers or fidgets; glances at watch; blank look on their face; takes a mobile call; and rarely smiles.
If you think you are loosing them you probably are. So ask some questions about their goals and bring the emotion back into the discussion!
Pinpoint the Problem
How can you top the retention in your industry or continually be the #1 sales person: care!
You should care about your customer, member or client as if they were a family member. When a family member has a problem, you sit and listen. Together you find a solution and together you are happy.
The same is with your customer, member or client – they all have problems, just dig deep and you will find them! You just need to listen carefully.
It’s all about Rapport
This summer to close more sales or build stronger relationships ensure that you are building great rapport. Here are some tips:
- Mirror & match body language – This is subtly matching the physical movements of your customer.
- Talking and intonation – speak like them! Use similar language at the same speed, the same volume and using similar intonations
- Find common ground – By asking questions you be able to find a common interest, sport, travel, cooking, travel. Once found you will have a bonding factor.
Use these methods and you will make your customer feel more comfortable where they are and with you. This will bring you closer to making the sale or building on the relationship.

A Word from Albert Einstein

Product of the Month: Ezypay
The billing company Ezypay has been in the fitness industry for the same period that Justin has. In fact, Justin is always excited to say that he was with the Ezypay founder George Holman on a trip in the USA looking at health club in the early 90’s when he made the decision to launch the business.
Over the years, Active Management have used different billing services. We started with Ezypay but moved away as they grow, we felt they lost the personal touch. But after 10 years, we have returned and are very happy customers!
We have been with Ezypay for over 12 months now and I had no idea how easy it was to switch back. The Team took their time to educate me, show me and train me. The end result is that our billing occurs on time with minimal rejections.
And most importantly, Trent, Celeste and Daniel have returned the personal service to Ezypay. Active Management is a very happy customer of Ezypay and we are pleased to recommend them and make them our first product of the month!
