Tour de Active
Last month we had over 130 members participate in the cycle challenge in the club. This free program was one of the most successful we have ever run. Thanks to everyone who participated and the winner was . . .
You will just have to wait until next month!
Biggest Loser Starts Soon!
Based on the popular TV show, we will have our very own Biggest Loser Program that starts on September 10th. We have designed 3 packages to help you change your body shape for ever!
Each week there are weekly weigh-ins, group and individual work outs and educational information. This year we have also included some nutritional advice.
In 2006 when we ran the program, we had over 100 members participate and reduce their weight and percentage of body fat.
So if you would like to find out more about Active's Biggest Loser 6 week challenge, see Duncan or click here.
Wise Words From Stacey
Winter has certainly arrived, so it is time to find some motivation to keep on track with your workouts in the colder month.
One of the best ways to keep motivated for exercise through the cold is to set achievable goals. Setting goals on a regular basis will help motivate you to achieve, an added incentive will help further- so how would you reward yourself if you were to achieve your goal?
Some others ways to keep active in the colder months is to have a personal trainer or train with a friend. We usually don't like letting our friends down so making regular training times with a friend will help you survive the winter months.
Good luck and I hope you all can reap the benefits in summer.
Something New from Kristy
To help make the Club cleaner and give us some more room we have two new Fit Ball Racks and fit balls!
The recent purchase of the fit balls will help you with your training and add variety within your workout. Some members may have experience using the fit ball as part of a personal training session but with the purchase of more, you can now try and incorporate usage in your own personal workout. They are great for abdominal works, balance and stretching. So try something new in August and jump on a fit ball - check out Nathan's exercise of the month or book in and see Nathan.
The Fit Ball Crunch from Nathan
This is a great core exercise to strengthen the abdominal region, which helps with stabilisation. It is more effective than a crunch performed on a matt because it places the muscles in a pre-stretched position which in turn works the muscle harder through the beginning phase of the crunch.
How to perform it:
- Slowly roll down the ball while comfortably placing your shoulders on the ball with both feet STRAIGHT AHEAD.
- Place hands on the side of head. Do not hold and carry the head!
- Draw your lower abdomen inward toward your spine before initiating the movement.
- While maintaining the draw-in manoeuvre, curl the entire spine up starting from the c cervical region.
- While still maintaining the draw-in manoeuvre, lower slowly as far as you can control.
- Repeat recommended repetitions.
- The chin should be tucked toward the chest throughout the movement.
- Experiment with different arm positions to vary the level of difficulty
Member of the Month . . . Craig
Craig Perry is a keen and loyal member as he works out at least 3 times a week and is an active participant of all the programs and challenges we have to offer including Punch Away the Guilt, Active Olympics, Tour de Active and personal training with Kieran.
Craig has also spread the word to his friends and has referred and introduced a number of new members to the club. With Craig's proactive support to the club's programs and dedication to his workouts makes it a pleasure to have him around.
Results of the Month
Well done Mark who shared with us:
"Following an accident last year in which I ruptured my Achilles tendon I joined Active to embark on a rehab programme. Duncan showed me around and was very encouraging however being a complete skeptic about the virtues of personal trainers I initially was not interested and just did the regular gym workouts.
After a short while I was not happy with the progress I was making and so I decided to give the PT a go with Chris.
The results have been outstanding. I am a complete convert now and recognize the virtues of the variety and expertise that a PT, and in my particular case Chris, has contributed to my fitness that goes way beyond the rehab objective I had at the start."
Well done Mark!
If you would like to share your success story with the world - or just the other Active Members - then tell us! Click here and let Duncan know about your journey and what you have achieved.
Yummo: Pumpkin & Capsicum Pasta

650g jap pumpkin
Per serve:
KJ = 1745
Kcal = 410
Carb = 63g
Fat = 8g
Fibre = 5g
|
1 large red capsicum, seeded and halved
2 springs fresh rosemary
1 clove garlic
1 Tablespoon olive oil
250g pasta shapes (e.g. bows or twists)
White wine sauce
1 teaspoon olive oil
1 teaspoon margarine
1 large red onion, halved and thinly sliced
1 clove garlic, crushed
2 teaspoons seeded mustard
1 spring fresh rosemary, chopped
cup white wine
200ml low fat evaporated milk
basil leaves
- Preheat a fan-forced grill on medium high.
- Cut the pumpkin into 3 wedges. Peel and then slice each wedge into 0.5cm thick slice, to create small triangular shaped pieces of pumpkin. Toss the sliced pumpkin and capsicum in the olive oil with the rosemary and garlic to coat. Lay the pumpkin in a single layer, and the capsicum skin-side up, on a sheet of baking paper on a tray. Place under a fan-forced hot grill for 10 minutes.
- Put the pasta on to cook in a large saucepan of boiling water.
- Remove the capsicum from the grill and place in a paper bag, fold down the top and set aside. Return the pumpkin to the grill far another 5-10 minutes or until it is browned and tender.
- Heat the olive oil and margarine in a large frying pan and sauté the onion and garlic over moderate heat for 2 minutes. Add the mustard, rosemary and white wine and simmer for 2 minutes to reduce slightly.
- While the wine is reducing, remove the capsicum from the bag and peel off the skin (which should lift easily). Slice into strips.
- Add the evaporated milk to the frying pan and a handful of fresh basil leaves, stirring over low heat as they wilt. Add the drained hot pasta stirring to coat with the sauce. Then add the capsicum strips and pumpkin and serve.
